What happens when you search something on Google or
Bing?
You get numerous web page links which provide information relevant to
your search. Have you ever observed that these web page links change their
position from time to time, even though you type the same key word? This is
because Search engines like Google (Google site ranking) , Yahoo (Yahoo site ranking) and Bing (Bing site ranking) rank web pages time to time based
on various parameters.
In this article we are going to discuss 7 important
steps to improve your website ranking in search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. A good search engine ranking can ramblingly
improve visitors to your web site or blog. This indirectly boosts your search engine marketing(SEM) also. They are …
1 TITLE AND META TAGS:
The title and meta description of your web site is of
prime importance in analyzing the type of website/ blog you are running. Let me
explain! We have millions of web sites and each web site carries information on
specific field. Lets’ talk about Techno talks 4u, which is a blog on
Technology. But how do search engines know this? So they simply read your
<title> tag in your web page HTML and their associated Meta descriptions.
This is one prerequisite for every web site or blog. The title tag is the NAME
OF YOUR WEB SITE, and the Meta information provides (such as description
and key words) information on CONTENT of your web page. Search engines like Google
or Bing analyzes the name, description and key words of your web page and stores
them in the form of index pages. So when a visitor enquires about a specific topic,
based on the key words and description provided by the web pages, their links
are shown as search results in a sequential order.
This order of presentation of various web pages with relevant content is called SEARCH ENGINE RANKING. So the top ranked web pages appear first.
Web pages with good title and complete meta description rank better.
Hence title, description and key words play key role
in optimizing web pages for search engine and help in better ranking.
2 WELL PLANNED WEB SITE FLOW CHART:
All the pages on your website should be visible and
easily reachable. The main page should have valid referral links to all the
remaining pages on web site. For example, if I have a web site with a main
landing page and 3 additional pages. The links of all these 3 pages should be
present on the main landing page.
It is always better to use “<a> href </a> attribute to link your additional pages.
But having too many links on your web page may hinder
its visibility in Google results. Hence try to limit them. The
structure and flow chart of the web site should be smooth and simple. Complex
designs have more chance to hide data which may make search engine
optimization incomplete.
Web sites with simple or less complex hierarchy rank better.Compatibility of websites with various web browsers can also have an impact on their Google rankings. Web sites which are compatible with most of the browsers rank better

3 CONTENT MANAGMENT:
Good content is the heart of a website or a blog. Worthy content always comes in combo with good search engine optimization.
Search engines like to rate a web page based on the visitor's flow to
your web site or blog. But prime importance is given to content. The content we
provide in web pages should be clear and relevant to the meta description of
the web site or blog.
Mobile platforms transformed the pace of internet.
With the advent of Android, Apple and Windows phones, the availability of web
information has become wide spread. But web sites and blogs which are mobile
friendly have an edge in this regard.
A mobile friendly web page ranks much better than its counterpart in Google rankings.
But how do I know whether
my web site is mobile friendly or not? Google has provided mobile friendly testing tool (click here) to test your web site pages (Google website checker) and know the errors. The loading time of
web sites plays a key role in Google rankings.
Sites with good loading times rank better when compared to others. But how do I know my sites loading time? There are many web sites available to test your web site or blog loading times. Page speed insights (click here) is one of the best sites by Google to test your web site loading time.
4 ROBOT.TXT:
Google bot is a specially designed algorithm or
software that continuously crawls in to web pages. It analyzes web pages of
your website or blog, reads it's content and relates it to other web pages with
similar content. This helps Google in ranking your web page among your
competitors. But analyzing and ranking unnecessary pages in your website may effect
your search engine ranking. In this regard, we can guide search engines to
crawl into specific web pages which are important leaving unnecessary web
pages, aside. This can be done by using a file in your web site called
“Robot.txt file”. Robot.txt file clearly commands/ guides search engines to
crawl into specific web pages leaving unnecessary pages. This can boost up
your Search engine ranking.
Use custom robot.txt files to specify search engines, which pages to be crawled in and which pages shouldn’t.
You
can create a customized robot.txt file for your web site from small seo tools (click here) .
5 GOOGLE SEARCH CONSOLE:
Google bot regularly scrutinizes web sites for new web pages. But at times some web pages may be over looked which fail to reach Google search results. hence Google has provided a great tool called “Google search console”, where you can directly submit your web page to Google through “site maps”. A site map is a simple XML file with the web page’s Url, meta data of the Web page (name and description of web site) along with some additional information on web page updation. In other words you are inviting Google to crawl into a specific web page using these site maps. Hence creating sitemaps for your web pages (important web pages) and submitting them to google search console is a good procedure. Once Google analyzes the web content in you web page, then it creates an index of your web page. These indexed pages will be shown in google search results. 6 SERVER PROTOCOL:
Google continuously searches for any change in the
content of their indexed pages. It sends conditional enquiries to servers to
find out the following questions:
- If any change has been made to the web page
- What change has been made to the web page
- Since when the modification has been done.
The above protocol is done by “if-modified-since” HTTP
header. Hence the server hosting you web sites should be “if-modified-since”compliant, for maintaining and updating your indexed web pages. It’s important to find out whether your web server supports
“if-modified-since” HTTP header or not
7 SECURITY:
Most readers prefer a secured and encrypted connection
over a non-encrypted connection. Hence web sites and blogs with HTTPS connect
rank better than HTTP connections.
Encrypted connections provide a sense of trust among your readers which can boost up your loyal visitor's count.
So follow these seven steps. Make necessary changes in
you web site or blog. This can really boost up your search engine rankings.
